RHCP – Refugee Healthcare Providers

Our Work

Programmes That Reach People Where They Are

Compassionate, community-based healthcare, specialised outreach and pioneering health solutions across Uganda’s refugee settlements and host communities.

How We Work

Building Healthier Communities, Together

At RHCP, sustainable healthcare for refugees goes beyond clinics. Our approach combines medical care, education and community empowerment — designed with and for the communities we serve.

Grassroots engagement, mobile outreach, capacity building and strategic partnerships let us build resilient health systems where refugees don’t just survive, but thrive with dignity and hope.

Ten interconnected programme areas anchor our model, each designed to meet refugees where they are.

Primary Healthcare

Primary Care

Comprehensive Primary Healthcare, Where Families Live

Our primary healthcare programme brings essential medical services directly to refugee settlements and host communities through mobile clinics and community-based delivery, so no one is left behind in accessing basic care.

We provide specialised care for chronic conditions such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, diabetes and hypertension, and maintain strong hospital partnerships for emergency referrals and seamless care transitions.

Services include general consultations for acute and chronic conditions, vaccinations and health screenings, wound and trauma care, medication monitoring, patient education and peer support groups for people living with chronic disease, with coordinated referrals and follow-up throughout treatment.

Reproductive Health

SRHS

Sexual & Reproductive Health Services With Dignity

We provide confidential family planning counselling and contraceptive services, respecting diverse backgrounds and beliefs, alongside maternal health support through pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period.

Our sexual health services include STI testing, treatment and HIV prevention, and our menstrual health programme provides education and essential supplies that protect the dignity and health of women and girls.

We also run youth-friendly reproductive health services, safe delivery and emergency obstetric care, postnatal and newborn care, nutrition counselling for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers, confidential HIV testing, STI screening and partner notification, and training on making reusable sanitary products.

Mental Health

MHPSS

Mental Health & Psychosocial Support for Healing

Our trauma-informed approach recognises the complex psychological impact of displacement, conflict and loss, offering individual and group counselling in a safe, culturally sensitive environment.

We train community members and health workers in psychological first aid, run peer support groups where refugees heal together, and teach practical stress-management techniques that build resilience.

Support ranges from crisis intervention and healing circles to women’s and youth resilience programmes, community dialogues that challenge stigma, art therapy, mindfulness, and sport and physical activity for mental wellness.

Health Education

Education

Health Education & Community Awareness

Our campaigns address hygiene, sanitation, nutrition and disease prevention, with culturally appropriate materials in local languages so vital information reaches everyone regardless of literacy.

Youth-focused programmes reach children and adolescents in schools and community centres, while dialogue sessions create safe spaces to discuss health and bridge traditional and modern practice.

Materials include multilingual brochures and posters, pictorial guides and audio resources for people who cannot read, alongside school health clubs, adolescent life-skills training, immunisation awareness and myth-busting sessions.

Empowerment

Training

Empowerment & Healthcare Training

We train refugees as community health workers and peer educators, equipping them as health advocates and first-line providers, and invest in women’s leadership so they can drive change in health outcomes.

Young refugees receive healthcare training, leadership skills and child-safeguarding education — building a generation of change agents for health and development in their communities.

Trained health workers receive certification, ongoing supervision and mentorship, while women and young people gain income-generating skills, scholarships and volunteer roles, and communities learn GBV prevention and child-safeguarding practices.

Emergency Response

Emergency

Emergency & Humanitarian Response

Our rapid response team identifies, contains and manages disease outbreaks in refugee settlements, working closely with health authorities to prevent widespread transmission.

We keep strategic reserves of essential medical supplies for rapid deployment, train communities in emergency preparedness, and work within the humanitarian coordination framework during crises.

This includes disease surveillance and early warning, outbreak investigation and contact tracing, isolation and treatment set-up, cold-chain management for vaccines, first aid and evacuation training, and joint assessments and situation reporting with humanitarian partners.

Referral Care

Referral

Referral & Specialised Care, Start to Finish

We coordinate referrals to specialised facilities for conditions that need care beyond our primary services, drawing on an extensive network of partner hospitals.

Patient navigation guides refugees through complex health systems with interpretation and advocacy throughout treatment, and follow-up keeps care continuous after specialised treatment.

We help with transport, treatment costs, insurance and payment processes, and support patients through medical decisions, rehabilitation, medication adherence and long-term care planning.

Advocacy

Advocacy

Advocacy & Rights Promotion

We work with government officials, policymakers and international organisations to advocate for inclusive health policies that recognise and protect the rights of refugees and vulnerable communities.

Legal awareness programmes empower refugees with knowledge of their rights, while community mobilisation and international partnerships amplify refugee voices in decision-making.

Our teams engage the Ministry of Health and parliamentary committees, run legal-rights workshops, support documentation and registration, refer people to legal aid, and share lessons with UN agencies and international NGOs.

Education Outreach

Outreach

Educational Outreach Built on Local Needs

We design educational programmes from community needs assessments and cultural considerations, using interactive workshops, peer learning and hands-on demonstrations so knowledge sticks.

Sessions run in multiple languages, and we train local leaders to sustain education programmes that keep benefiting communities long-term.

Topics cover disease prevention, nutrition, hygiene and sanitation, understanding health systems, first aid, maternal and child health, mental health, reproductive health and chronic disease management.

Community Services

Community

Community Services That Build Resilience

Beyond healthcare, RHCP fosters resilience through health literacy programmes, peer counselling and support groups, and leadership development that strengthens refugee communities from within.

Specialised programmes support women’s maternal health and economic empowerment, mentor refugee youth, and help refugees keep their cultural identity while building bridges with host communities.

Skills programmes such as tailoring open new livelihood opportunities, and community health champions bridge the gap between their settlements and local health services.
