Restoring Hope: Mental Health Outreach for Displaced Youth

How RHCP’s youth counselling programmes make healing possible for young refugees facing trauma.

Displacement exposes children and adolescents to immense hardship and trauma. According to the UNHCR, refugee youth are at higher risk for stress, depression, and anxiety than their peers. RHCP’s mental health teams have launched targeted programs to bring hope and healing to these young lives.

In partnership with schools, local faith leaders, and community councils, RHCP offers group therapy, safe play zones, and peer counseling. All activities draw from proven frameworks, such as the WHO’s Mental Health in Emergencies guidelines.

Empowering Youth as Peer Counselors

RHCP’s peer support program trains adolescents as mental health ambassadors in their settlements, enabling them to detect warning signs in friends and facilitate referrals. This approach promotes safety and sustainability—even as new crises emerge.

“During the sessions, I learned I am not alone. Now I can help my classmates too,” says Daniel, peer counselor aged 16, in Kyangwali.

Building for Tomorrow: The Path Forward

RHCP’s vision is to expand outreach, train more youth leaders, and embed mental health support in every aspect of refugee life. The work continues—one child, one safe space, one community at a time.
